Jan. 31, 2012 - PRLog -- The 2012 Subaru Outback is the best choice if your idea of a midsize crossover SUV includes one with space and capabilities you’ll actually use. The 2012 Subaru Outback is in line for a re-engineered base engine expected to deliver slightly better fuel economy but will retain four- and six-cylinder power, standard all-wheel drive, and a remarkably space-efficient four-door, five-passenger wagon body. It’s not designed for serious off-roading, but Outback can acquaint you with the wilderness and won’t be daunted by deep snow. Consumer Guide says "Subaru's Outback is a well-rounded combination of midsize car, station wagon, and sport-utility attributes.”

The 2012 Subaru Outback has generous cargo space, roomy seats and standard all-wheel drive. The Outback can be had as a basic family runner for about $23,000, or a near-luxury car with leather seats, navigation and top-notch entertainment features for about $35,000. No matter how you outfit the Outback, it has a pleasing driving experience, excellent safety scores and a level of practicality that other station wagons, crossovers and small SUVs have trouble keeping up with.

The Subaru Outback is a wagon companion to the Subaru Legacy sedan. It also sports a raised suspension. It has standard all-wheel drive and a horizontally opposed "boxer" engine. Two models are available, and each is subdivided into additional trims. The base 2.5i, mid-line 2.5i Premium, and top-end 2.5i Limited are all powered by a 170-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. The 2.5i and Premium offer the choice of a 6-speed manual or continuously variable transmission (CVT) that behaves like an automatic. The 2.5i Limited comes only with the CVT. The other Outback variant is the 3.6R, which comes as the base, Premium, and Limited. These Outbacks have a 256-horsepower 3.6-liter 6-cylinder engine and a 5-speed automatic transmission. Safety features include ABS, traction control, curtain-side airbags, and front-side airbags. Every 2012 Outback comes with Subaru’s Vehicle Dynamics Control anti-skid system to help keep all four wheels planted during extreme or emergency handling maneuvers, traction control to help negotiate wet or snowy surfaces at lower speeds, and torso-protecting front side airbags and head-protecting side curtain airbags for all outboard positions.  A navigation system with rearview camera is optional on Limiteds.

The 2012 Outback Premium models should add amenities like a power driver’s seat, cargo cover, fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and rear privacy glass. Expect top-of-the-line Limited versions to again come standard with a host of features, many of which are optional on the Premium models.

•   Woodgrain dashboard trim
•   440-watt, nine-speaker Harmon/Kardon premium audio system that includes a CD changer, XM satellite radio, and Bluetooth hands-free mobile phone interface.
•   Options include a power moonroof that comes bundled with a rear backup camera with display integrated into an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Subaru has thus far confined the navigation-system option to the Limited models. It’s a voice-command setup that also includes a backup camera but displays its images on the navigation system screen.
