Recap: 16th Annual Basketball Academy Scholarships and Winners Announced

The 16th Annual Basketball Academy January 26-28 was a great success exposing high school athletes in the Baltimore region to cultural and academic enrichment as well as competitive basketball games.

Feb. 1, 2012 - PRLog -- (Baltimore, MD) – The 16th Annual Basketball Academy presented by State Farm was held at Lake Clifton High School in Baltimore last weekend (January 26-28), featuring the top high school basketball teams who participated in SAT prep, cultural and academic enrichment as well as competitive basketball games. The Basketball Academy also honored student athletes and Miriam Tutt, assistant principal, Baltimore City Public Schools and John Swann of Dayton, Ohio, who have volunteered their time with the Basketball Academy for 16 years to help give student athletes an added academic advantage.

During the Academy, students visited Great Blacks in Wax Museum, Reginald F. Lewis Museum, B&O Railroad Museum and the National Museum of Dentistry as part of The Basketball Academy cultural enrichment program. In addition, students participated in SAT (General) and SAT (Math) workshops; Elite Sports presented workshops on College Admissions and State Farm led Financial Literacy workshops. Female participants also participated in the Rites of Passage program.

The following students received Scholar Athlete Awards. The recipient of this scholarship is a student athlete at any grade level, nominated by the Head Coach for outstanding academic achievement:

The Academy is a 501(c) 3 organization that aims to prepare students for the SAT and the college admissions process, while exposing middle and high school players to competitive basketball teams from Baltimore City, Baltimore, Harford and Prince George’s counties. Basketball Academy “graduates” include several NBA and NCAA division 1 players such as Rudy Gay (Memphis Grizzlies), Josh Selby (Memphis Grizzlies), Will Barton (University of Memphis), Roscoe Smith (University of Connecticut), Asia Logan (University of Pittsburgh) and LaShay Taft (Syracuse).
