The semi-formal event, to be held at the luxurious 1840s Plaza in Downtown Baltimore from 8pm to midnight, will benefit Jubilee Arts – community arts program partnered with Baltimore Clayworks and the Maryland Institute College of Art to offer classes in ceramics, visual arts, creative writing and dance to underserved people of all ages. The event will feature great R&B and Soul music, gourmet catering and raffles, door prizes and silent auctions of hotel accommodations, spa treatments and more. Most importantly, there will be special dance presentations of Chicago Step, Hand Dance and Urban Line Dance by Jubilee Arts instructors and adult participants. These dances find their beginnings in the Swing era, and are a rich part of the African American tradition and American history. Jubilee Arts is located on the historic Pennsylvania Avenue once home to the legendary Royal Theatre, Sphinx Club and others, where many of these dances, Baltimore/DC Hand Dance in particular, were first enjoyed. Formerly the hub of African-American arts and entertainment in Baltimore, this area has been struggling for decades to regain its former glory and combat the ills of poverty, drugs and violence. Jubilee Arts is working to restore the rich cultural heritage and vitality of this famous corridor by providing arts activities, hosting cultural events such as open mic nights and concerts, offering opportunities for local artists to instruct sessions and host exhibitions, leading public art projects and more. For more information about Jubilee Arts and this event, please call 410.728.1199 or visit http://www.jubileeartsbaltimore.org.
