When Hope Finds a Home: Images, Film and Conversation

Feb. 10, 2012 - PRLog -- San Francisco –The Hannah Project Partnership for Academic Achievement is sponsoring: When Hope Finds a Home: Images, Film and Conversation in celebration of Black History Month in Marin City. On February 12th, opening festivities will feature a photo exhibition of well-known photographer, David S. Johnson, best known for documentation of the San Francisco Fillmore District during the 1940s and 1950s, a vibrant center of African American jazz. Johnson also photographed such talent as Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday and Nat “King” Cole. This exciting exhibition is a behind the scenes look at Black life and culture during the infamous “Negro Removal” which permanently displaced 20,000 residents. The opening event will be held at the Gateway Shopping Center, 170 Donohue Street (next to Best Buy) in Marin City. The  exhibition will run from February 12 – February 29th.

This retrospective will pose significant ideas about the trajectory of African Americans in San Francisco and the Bay Area region. Throughout the month of February several themes will be explored in a series of conversations and interactive discussions. Themes will include Family Night events, a community song fest/open mike and karaoke, a community house party, card games, community discussions, and rebuilding a community without space.
