Feb. 16, 2012 - PRLog -- A toilet brush, the top of a baby’s high chair and the footwell of a Land Rover were all removed from Porthtowan beach in Cornwall on Saturday by the staff of Ward Williams Associates.

35 employees of the Truro-based construction consultancy committed themselves to a morning of beach cleaning to support their chosen charity, Surf Action.

The team collected a total of 25 bin liners of rubbish which filled the back of a flat bed lorry that Joshua Fox of Cathedral Builders drove to the St Day Recycling Centre.

Surf Action aims to support the rehabilitation of combat veterans by using surfing and the beach environment as an escape from daily barriers faced by those who have returned from conflict with psychological trauma or physical injuries.

Chris Hines MBE founded Surfers Against Sewage and is a director of the newly created charity.  He is also mentoring Ward Williams Associates in the practice’s bid to become one of the greenest construction consultancies in the UK.

“The beach clean is a small indicator of WWA’s large commitment to sustainable building.  WWA recently created the ‘Green Team’ and has already started some exciting projects which will prove their expertise.  It is heartening to see a large construction consultancy act with greater consideration for the environment.”

Saturday’s clean up immediately improved the beach for members of Surf Action to enjoy.

Craig Tanner from WWA was pleased that so many colleagues got involved.

“We want to support the excellent work of Surf Action any way that we can and a beach clean is a good place to start.  The volume of rubbish that we collected was surprising but the list of strange finds was peculiar, we found shoes, oil drums and even shot gun shells.”

It was the toilet brush and the section of high chair that won the prizes for most intriguing items.  Chris Hines awarded both winners with a copy of ‘Dominant Wave Theory’ by Andy Hughes.

The volunteers were rewarded with a hot drink from Blue Bar to warm them through on the cold but sunny day.

Recently rated by Building magazine as the 9th fastest growing construction consultancy in the UK, WWA has many environmental projects both planned and complete.  Next year the consultancy will work with the Eden Project to deliver a rainforest canopy walkway in the tropical biome - the first of its kind.

Soon to be completed is the lottery funded zero carbon Heartlands Project, for which WWA are the cost managers and quantity surveyors appointed by Cornwall Council to work with the design team to ensure that the sustainable objectives are cost-effectively met.
