Subway Sandwich King Raghu Marwaha Shares Success Secrets in Exclusive MASTERS Interview

March 5, 2012 - PRLog -- A true American success story, Raghu and his brother Rohit Marwaha made it to the top by climbing up the ranks. In 1994, when $5 footlongs weren’t even on the menu and the rapidly growing company had reached 10,000 stores and counting, the teenage brothers were hard at work in a Subway store owned by a family friend. Raghu and Rohit not only made sandwiches just as each customer specified, they also paid close attention to what a fantastic business opportunity it could be for their family. They soon talked their parents into purchasing a franchise in Hawthorne, California – but the Marwaha business did not end there.

Raghu and Rohit went off to college a few years later, and then entered the corporate world. Both excelled at their jobs but soon realized they were not in control of their own destiny. Observing their parents’ franchise and the system as a whole made them realize that Subway held much greater potential than their post-college corporate desks. They approached their parents about joining them in a Subway venture, and the Marwahas soon changed their operation from a “mom and pop” mentality to building expertise in operational systems and technology, which was necessary if they were going to compete with the giants of the restaurant industry. Training became another key component in building the proper foundation for Subway to continue growing.

Today, Raghu and Rohit own 100-plus Subway franchises and oversee 400 Subway restaurants as development agents in Southern California. They also take an active part on several boards within the Subway system. One year into their new role, they won the 2001 Franchisee of the Year award in Los Angeles. And in 2005, they won the Development Agent of the Year award for all of North America – just two of the roughly 25 accolades the brothers have earned in the system, along with the respect of Subway associates who consider them a huge component of the franchise’s growth in the last ten years.

The brothers attribute their success to their father, Ravi Marwaha, a lifelong entrepreneur and international businessman. They say they’ve been training for their current success since their early teenage years when their father taught them about business.

Interviewed by Winn Claybaugh for MASTERS Audio Club, Raghu says his greatest achievements come from focusing on the future. “Many business owners are too busy pouring the champagne when they reach a goal or milestone,” he says. “They take their focus off of the next step…. Our attitude has always been to conquer something else.”
