Mendes has spent the past two years cycling past Lord & Taylor almost every day on the way to work. Commuters on High Ridge Road may recall seeing a woman riding a bike with purple tires and a large backpack during rush hour. This was not only Mendes' main mode of transportation, until July 2011, but it was her training for the LIVESTRONG events she and her children participate in every year. Her daily commute would start in Pound Ridge, NY, and continue to her workplace on Summer Street for a total of 25-30 miles a day.

In July of 2011, however, that changed when, years before she was due for her first mammogram, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately, due to her involvement with LIVESTRONG, she immediately had a support network from all over the world, encouraging her and guiding her through her cancer fight.

Now, she is intent on paying the Lance Armstrong Foundation back for their support.
