By: Daniel F. Oppliger The moon will not completely block the sun, thus a golden ring or annulus will hang in the sky for approximately 4 minutes. Amateur astronomers will be observing the eclipse with special glasses made from a unique polymer material for eye safety. May will have special solar filters for their cameras, telescopes and binoculars. "Your teachers were right when they told you to never look at the sun," says Mark S. Margolis, President of Rainbow Symphony Inc. and founder of Eclipse Shades(R), the world's largest manufacturer and provider of CE certified eclipse viewing safety glasses and viewers. "According to NASA, improper viewing of the sun during an eclipse can result in 'eclipse blindness' or permanent retinal burns." Dr. Ralph Chou has examined Eclipse Shades and written articles on safe solar viewing. Dr Chou has observed over 25 solar eclipses. Dr. Chou traveled with Tropical Sails Corp to China on the Silk Road in 2008 to observe a total solar eclipse. In 1994, Daniel Oppliger, President of Tropical Sails Corp, provided several school districts in Texas and New Mexico Eclipse Shades. He gave seminars and provided workshops for teachers about safe solar viewing. He was then called an "ecliptophile" Many schools elected to have their name printed on the Eclipse Shades as a memento to the May 1994 Annular Solar Eclipse. Several science departments used Eclipse Shades as a fundraising vehicle to supplement science instruction. Eclipse Shades are available in bundles as low as 25 pairs for just a $1.00 a pair.
