By: Melody M. McDowell ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA EXPRESSES OUTRAGE OVER DEATH OF TRAYVON MARTIN Chicago, Illinois - March 21, 2012 - Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority today expressed outrage over the death of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin and called for a “thorough, and swift investigation” Speaking on behalf of the Sorority’s 265,000 members in 965 chapters worldwide, International President Carolyn House Stewart denounced Florida’s “Stand Your Ground Law.” She demanded that this legislation – and all similar ones nationwide – be reviewed. Stewart, who is also a Florida-based attorney, said this incident is another example of why private citizens should call the police rather than take on the self appointed role of law enforcement. Assessing the tragedy, Stewart said, “The circumstances leading to his death represent an example of bigoted instincts inspired by racism and an innocent African-American teen, whose profile played into one’s racial fears.” Stewart acknowledged that we do not know all the facts surrounding the tragedy. However, she said that it is undisputable that “that this young man was unarmed and not committing any crime when he was senselessly shot to death.” While the AKA president expressed optimism that federal authorities have entered the case, she failed to understand why this could not be resolved by local law-enforcement authorities. Attorney Stewart said that Alpha Kappa Alpha would be monitoring developments along with the growing numbers of organizations and individuals that are infuriated by this heart-breaking tragedy. She said the case is a cautionary warning to all parents of young African-American males. “Even an ordinary trip to the store can turn violent in any community in America.“ “Trayvon Martin’s death should be a rallying cry to review laws that invite the type of tragedy that occurred,” exclaimed Stewart. She said Alpha Kappa Alpha would be diligent in monitoring this case to assure that justice is served. Meanwhile, she expressed sympathy to Trayvon’s parents and pledged the Sorority’s support in their fight for justice. # # # MELODY'service is a public relations/communications firm that also specializes in editing and writing in all formats including speechwriting and obituaries.
