Visitors will now get to experience a unique visual orientation of Savannah’s history, design, architectural styles, and historic preservation movement before touring Savannah’s streets and squares. Massie Heritage Center will become “Your First Stop in Georgia’s First City”. Guests will discover new interactive exhibits including a laser show of a rebuilt three-dimensional model of James E. Oglethorpe’s famous city plan in Savannah: An Intelligent Grid, and life-size classical structures from around the world to demonstrate the impact on Savannah’s own architecture in the Classically Inspired exhibit. The preservation movement is told through treasures of artifacts and photographs in Loss and Regeneration and the Heritage Classroom is a living replica of how a school would have looked in the 1800’s. Massie Common School was Georgia’s “first public school” and opened its doors on October 15, 1856. It was a model for many schools to follow. Designed by nationally acclaimed architect John S. Norris, Massie is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings. Massie is a part of the Savannah Chatham County Public School System and is used as a teaching museum for history and architecture. In 2006, the Friends of Massie launched a capital campaign to raise $1,000,000 to restore this historic landmark building and upgrade its’ exhibits. Through funding from ESPLOST, grants and generous contributions, the Friends of Massie reached their goal and now wish to make this museum available to the community and visitors to Savannah.
