Savannah Old Fashioned Church Bazaar To Kick off Holiday Season

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Oct. 23, 2018 - PRLog -- The annual 2018 Holly Days Bazaar will kick off the holidays in Savannah, Georgia.  The Holly Days Bazaar is one of the oldest traditions in the city, celebrating 69 years of fundraising for area charities, and sponsored by the women of St. John's Church.  1949 was the year of the first bazaar, when the 45-rpm record made its debut, when party phone lines were still common, and Fine's Department Store was thriving on Broughton Street.

Proceeds from the annual bazaar go back into the community, and include over 25 organizations, including the Tybee Fresh Air Home, preservation of the historic Green-Meldrim House, The Living Vine, and Greenbriar Children's Center.  Proceeds also go to help the "Back Pack Buddies" program, part of America's Second Harvest, which provides back packs of food to children at risk of hunger while they are away from school, over the weekends and during holidays.

The hub of all activities will be the campus of St. John's Church on Madison Square. Outdoor shopping will be in the mall area in front of the Green-Meldrim House. The White Elephant Sale and Treasure Room will be open both days inside Cranmer Hall on Charlton Street.  Homemade jams, jellies and chutneys will be sold, as well as handmade jewelry, holiday crafts and garden plants.

The bazaar begins on Wednesday, November 7, at 10:00 AM, with shopping for crafts and garden specialties until 2:00 PM.  Lunch is served on Wednesday and Thursday in the Green-Meldrim House, just steps away from the church, from 11 AM until 2 PM.  The menu includes homemade pimento cheese, shrimp and chicken salad sandwiches, vegetable soup and chili, along with decadent desserts, and to-go orders are welcome!  A silent auction, featuring getaway vacations, gifts, wines, and parties is open for bidding in the Green-Meldrim house from 11 until 2.    Raffle tickets will be sold for an elegant 7-course Candlelight Dinner to be enjoyed in the historic Green-Meldrim House at a date to be coordinated with the winner.

St. John's Church is located in downtown Savannah at 1 West Macon Street on Madison Square, across from The DeSoto.  Parking is available in the church parking lot on Whitaker Street on a first-come basis.  Pre-order take-out lunches at bazaarlunch@gmail.com.
