By: Vintage Seekers Vintage Seekers’ http://www.vintageseekers.com/ Norman Norell is considered one of the most influential designers in American fashion history. He won the first ever Coty American Fashion Critics Award. Norman Norell designs are still a popular feature in the collections of major museum such as the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Parsons Fashion Collection and the Smithsonian. During his lifetime, Norman Norell was regarded as a rival to the great French courtiers such as Chanel and Dior. His designs were lauded for their glamour, timelessness, and high-quality construction – his signature styles including sequined ‘mermaid’ dresses, nautical references, oversize pockets and buttons. However, after the designer’s death in 1972, the company floundered and it was closed down a few years later. As such Norman Norell has faded into relative obscurity in the past few decades although his pieces are still sought-after by vintage fashion collectors.
