Second Annual Broad and Cassel Health Forum Receives Rave Reviews

June 19, 2012 - PRLog -- "I was extremely pleased with the logical and clear explanation of the current ACO environment and the realistic view of the future healthcare landscape,” wrote one of the nearly 100 attendees at the recent Second Annual Broad and Cassel Health Forum held at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.  

The statewide law firm hosted the event to provide timely and educational material to health care providers in Florida.  The keynote speaker was Chris Schlanger, MD, MBA, managing director for the Advisory Board Company (http://www.advisory.com), a global research, consulting and technology firm partnering with 125,000 leaders in 3,200 organizations across health care and higher education. Dr. Schlanger, who spoke on “Health Care 2020: Charting Independent Practice Course in a Changing Health Care Environment,” is a board-certified emergency medicine physician who spent several years in active clinical practice.

Dr. Schlanger began his discussion by addressing the question, “Where are we really going with health care? The public discussion gets hung up on the political topics and we miss the underlying issues,” he said. “The next decade has been decided as much by the private sector than by the government.” We don’t have to wait until decisions like the individual mandate, which is hung up in Supreme Court, are made,” he explained.  “We have to make decisions now.”

Mike Segal, who chairs Broad and Cassel’s Health Law Practice Group, addressed the “Ins and Outs of Clinical Integration and ACOs.”    A frequent speaker and author of topics related to Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), Segal said, “with all of the doom and gloom, tremendous opportunities exist, but we have to change our culture and the way we do things.  We have to have a plan.  ACOs are upon us and a cost quality initiative is forcing providers to reduce costs and increase quality.”

Also speaking at the Broad and Cassel Health Forum was another nationally-known health law attorney, Gabriel Imperato, who is the managing partner of the firm’s Fort Lauderdale office and chair of the statewide White Collar Criminal and Civil Fraud Defense Practice Group.  His topic was “Overpayment Laws:  Refund in 60 Days or Face Penalties.”  The firm’s chair of the Government Relations Practice Group, Douglas Mannheimer, also provided an update on the 2012 Florida legislative session.
