Follow on Google News | Andrea Kimberlin, Miss KY United States 2012 to appear in Miss United States Pageant eventsAndrea Kimberlin, Miss Kentucky United States 2012 will be competing at the Miss United States Pageant in Washington D.C. from July 5-8. Her events will be streamed on-line.
Andrea is not the stereotypical beauty queen. She a 23-year-old female with a college degree in Computer Information Systems and works for a major corporation in an IT Leadership program. She is CompTIA Network + Certified, ITIL Foundation Certified, and is pursuing her SANS GSEC Certification. Andrea's platform for competition is ADHD Awareness. Miss Kimberlin was diagnosed with adult-onset ADHD in January, 2012. Says Kimberlin, "Being able to learn the same as others is one thing, being able to love yourself for who you are and knowing how to embrace your unique traits is very meaningful, but also a hard journey to endure. Too often we hear the negative stereotypes of our society and what we should change in order to be ‘perfect’ in the eyes of others, and this is especially true of those of us who have ADHD. Learning about ADHD from Dr. Hallowell's books helped me embrace and celebrate the positive aspects of ADHD and truly love myself for who I am. I am forever grateful for that. Many people in the United States feel ADHD is over-diagnosed. In fact, it’s estimated that 10% of the population has ADHD, which means it’s under-diagnosed. The largest populations of undiagnosed people with ADHD are adults and women. Nobody should have to suffer with undiagnosed ADHD for over 20 years as I have. I want to use my opportunity should I win the crown as Miss United States 2012 to encourage others to embrace ADHD as a gift as I have since my diagnosis, and seek a diagnosis if they feel that they may have ADHD."
