July 19, 2012 - PRLog -- The federal government has announced that baby bottles and sippy cups can no longer contain the chemical bisphenol-A, or BPA, due to health and safety concerns.
BPA has been used in the manufacture of countless items, such as food packaging, water bottles, canned food and beverages, and storage containers, since the 1960s. Consumer advocates have protested against use of the controversial chemical, which has been under scientific investigation for years.

Studies have shown that about 90% of Americans have traces of BPA in their urine due to the chemical leaching out of food and beverage containers.

Despite the BPA ban on baby bottles and sippy cups, consumer advocates say that infants and young children may still be exposed to BPA through canned formula sold in metal containers.

The Environmental Working Group continues to push for a ban of BPA in all cans of infant formula, food, and beverages. Some scientists are also arguing for a ban, remarking that BPA mimics the effects of the hormone estrogen and interferes with growth and development.

“As the controversy surrounding BPA grows and the number of bans against it increases, EMSL has received increased requests to test for the chemical in various types of samples,” states Scott Van Etten, CIH, National Director of Industrial Hygiene at EMSL Analytical. “We analyze BPA in consumer products, in food samples, and in the air for workplace exposure assessments, using methods such as LC/MS/MS or GC/MS.”
