The award is named in honor of G. Scott Griffin, who was a multi-disciplinary, multi-media artist with accomplishments in musical composition, multi-instrumental performance, photography, videography, digital enhancement of art and cinematography. From his childhood, Griffin coped with a visual handicap, congenital nystagmus, which would have been reason for most talented artists to cease performing. Rather than giving up his artistic dreams, Griffin invited his audiences to join him on a journey of discovery and beauty that was possible through the lens of his camera and his varied canvases. Griffin died of complications related to cancer on October 7, 2007 at the age of 45. The G. Scott Griffin Award was created to keep his memory alive and to honor those artists who approach their art and life with the same passion and persistence as Griffin. “Although I was born completely deaf in my right ear, I’ve been blessed with the remarkable gift of being a great communicator and have used my “voice” as a positive catalyst for change”, says Feaster-Evans. “As an actor, director, producer, and teaching artist, I am an “artistic messenger” using my God-given talents to touch, move, and inspire others through powerful mediums of expression. My passion for the cultural and performing arts and my pulse for connecting to people, both young and old have enabled me to plant seeds of artistic possibility that are nurtured into skills that blossom into reality.” Feaster-Evans has appeared on stage, film and television in various roles and f founded Mahogany Ensemble Theatre in Northwest Louisiana to provide an outlet and opportunity for African American artists to develop their acting, musical and dance skills. Since 2003, she has collaborated with some of the area’s most recognized artists to successfully mount and tour quality productions of the African American experience. The Ensemble produces an annual schedule of shows and travels around the U.S. performing. In 2008, Angelique produced the first biennial Southern Black Theatre Festival. This innovative cultural arts tourism experience celebrates the rich tradition of African American theatre in the South, while forging a regional collective of culture bearers committed to sustaining this theatrical genre.
