New CopperLink Ruggedized & Multi-Drop Ethernet Extenders Reach Beyond 3 Miles on Copper Cable

Patton expands the CopperLink CL1314 series adding ruggedized CL1314R and multi-drop CL1314MDE long-range Ethernet Extenders. Leveraging ubiquitous copper twisted pair, the new products link Ethernet LANs up to 4.26 miles apart in harsh environments.

Aug. 15, 2012 - PRLog -- CopperLink™... going the distance!

GAITHERSBURG, MD: Patton (www.patton.com) is now taking orders for the new US-manufactured CopperLink™ CL1314R Ruggedized Ethernet Extender and CL1314MDE Ruggedized Multi-Drop Ethernet Extender and Repeater that will start shipping mid-August.

The new products expand Patton's CopperLink™ CL1314 series first announced during May 2012.

Featuring simple plug-and-play installation with standard RJ45 connectors, CL1314 devices are useful for serial-to-IP migration, converting copper-based RS-232, RS-485 or RS-422 data transmission circuits to Ethernet IP—without installing new Ethernet wiring.

For railways, highways, campus or stadium security systems, industrial automation, SCADA and device networks, Patton's CL1314 series leverages common copper-wire network cabling to interconnect IP-enabled devices up to 4.26 miles (6.9 kilometers) apart..

In serial-to-network applications, the ruggedized CL1314R and multi-drop Ethernet CL1314MDE transparently support TCP Modbus, Profinet IO, Bacnet and Canopen. Other higher-layer protocols also pass transparently—including VLAN tagging, multicast addressing, VPN with IPsec, plus IP-video compression schemes.

Never heard of Multi-Drop Ethernet? While Multi-Drop Ethernet (MDE) may not yet be a universal term, Patton's newest CopperLink Ethernet extender is about to change that.

Patton coined the term Multi-Drop Ethernet to describe its most recent innovation in Ethernet Extension technology—the model CL1314MDE Ruggedized Multi-Drop Ethernet Extender and Repeater.

Serving as an Ethernet repeater with Ethernet drop-and-insert capability, the CL1314MDE provides multi-drop IP networking and long-distance Ethernet LAN bridging while stretching Ethernet segments up to 4.26 miles per hop.

Operating over standard 0.5 mm (24 AWG) voice-grade wiring, CL1314 extenders deliver speeds up to 5.7 Mbps and extend Ethernet connections across distances ranging from 1.7 to 4.26 miles (2.74 to 6.9 km)—without the expense or hassle of installing CAT5, CAT5e, or CAT6 Ethernet LAN cable.

Both models include an integrated crossover Ethernet switch for hassle-free setup. The CL1314MDE provides four auto-sensing full/half duplex 10/100Base-T Ethernet ports presented on RJ45 connectors. The CL1314R provides two.

Designed for IP40 specifications, the sturdy aluminum enclosure withstands operating temperatures ranging from -40 to 85° C. and offers a metal 35mm DIN-rail clip. Operators can use DIP-switch control to fine-tune the fastest achievable line rate for the circuit length and electro-magnetic environment.

In related news, yesterday Patton launched its new Redirection Service for SmartNode VoIP products, while last week the company announced its new BODi rS™ portable wireless Internet router that equips mobile or vehicle-based enterprises with high-speed wireless WAN-access, seamless multi-network roaming, bonding and failover—plus WiFi/wireless mesh access point—all in one box.

About CopperLink™ Ethernet Extenders

Patton has built Ethernet extenders in the USA ever since bringing the first Ethernet extender to market in the 1990s. Branded LAN-Xtend™, the Model 2111 achieved 2.3 Mbps over single twisted-pair. In 2002, Patton released the award-winning CopperLink™ 2158 that achieved speeds over 10 Mbps and reached up to 4656 feet (1372 meters). Announcing the CopperLink™ 2172 in 2006, Patton achieved full-duplex speeds up to 50 Mbps and distances reaching up to 6000 feet (1,820 meters). In 2010, Patton introduced the industry’s most versatile Ethernet Extender, the CopperLink™ 2160, capable of delivering 45 Mbps broadband Ethernet services and reaching distances up to 5.2 miles (8.3 kilometers) or more. Today CopperLink™ Ethernet Extenders are installed and operating in a vast diversity of environments, including nuclear power plants  , submarines, sports arenas, election systems, and a rock 'n' roll celebrity museum  .

CopperLink™ Hardened Industrial Solutions

Most CopperLink™ models are available in Patton's EnviroNET™ NEMA4-compliant, environmentally hardened enclosures. Suitable for installation in offshore oil rigs, pit mines, railway beds, and other harsh environments, EnviroNET™ enclosures protect network equipment against high wind, precipitation, salt spray, sand, oil, corrosive chemicals, and ice. EnviroNET™ solutions deliver communications services (Ethernet-over-copper, commercial/outdoor VoIP, T1/E1 extension, and others) in temperatures ranging from -40 to +185°F (-40 to +85°C).
