IMVU is a 3D chatroom and a virtual playground for people of all ages. With a versatility graphics engine, IMVU gives players a platform to express their creativity and meet others in a virtual reality type of setting. Like Secondlife, IMVU is more of a social experience than a video game even though players choose a 3D version of themselves.  Players don’t slay dragons, but they can design custom rooms, clothes, and other accessories. IMVU has a massive audience from around the world and continues to grow. Free players are labeled ‘guests’ and are restricted from the content creation portion of the game, but are free to explore virtual chat rooms and make friends. Players can also view videos and listen to music through the IMVU client.

Is IMVU Safe
In my experience using IMVU, I have no doubt in my mind that it's just as safe as any other social network online.  That being said, there are still creepy people on IMVU as there are on Facebook, Twitter, etc. so you should always use these social networking communities with precaution.  Obviously you shouldn't share any personal information with anyone you just met, and if someone is creeping you out then you can leave the chat and block that user.  It really is as simple as that.  Most of IMVU's users are between the ages of 13-34 years old, so there are many kids using it without any issues.
