Aug. 29, 2012 - PRLog -- The Learning CONSORTIUM is honoring MD Anderson for its innovation developing new models for providing learning, knowledge and skills to its employees, collaborators, patients and their families. MD Anderson has pioneered new approaches to using video, eLearning and other media in its efforts to impact the cancer problem.

"Achieving our mission to eliminate cancer requires new knowledge, so education is our mission area that enables the other three – patient care, research and prevention," says Oliver Bogler, Ph.D., senior vice president for academic affairs and vice president for global academic programs at MD Anderson.  "We continually work to employ the latest approaches to enhance our educational effectiveness, and we’re pleased to be recognized for these efforts.”

MD Anderson awards undergraduate degrees through its School of Health Professions and masters and doctoral degrees through The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston, which it jointly operates with The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. MD Anderson educates another 6,000 clinical and research students, trainees, physicians and scientists at various stages of their careers.

Additionally, the institution provides robust educational offerings to its 19,000 employees, patients and the general public. MD Anderson educational professionals provide health care leaders and bedside care providers with a broad range of opportunities to learn and develop. More than 75 of the comprehensive cancer center’s departments currently deploy training opportunities through its learning management system.

MD Anderson is also a leader in using video to support educational initiatives. Since 1994, MD Anderson has expanded its enterprise video conference infrastructure to more than fifty auditoriums, classrooms and conference rooms and now extends to desktop computers via web conferencing. MD Anderson supports both live and video-on-demand streaming for user-generated and professional video on web and social networking sites and in online courses. Video supports for-credit courses, continuing medical education, training initiatives and patient education.

As a global cancer leader, MD Anderson shares its expertise with institutions around the world, often employing innovative approaches. "We’ve developed a large network of international partners, our sister institutions, and offer online courses in core cancer disciplines to reach a global audience of learners," added Bogler.

“MD Anderson truly innovates and pushes the boundaries of organizational learning to improve not only employee learning and performance, but also the quality of care and life for its patients. Learning 2012 is pleased to honor MD Anderson, spotlighting its leadership in the learning and performance field.”  - Elliott Masie, Host & Curator, Learning 2012
