By: Jay Armsworthy From Henryville, Indiana, Michael Cleveland quickly became known as one of the hottest attractions in Bluegrass achieving recognition, not for the fact that he is blind, but for his blistering and unconventional fiddle style. He is considered one of the premier bluegrass fiddlers of his generation. Michael picked up a fiddle at age four. Since 1990 he has appeared on stage with Bill Monroe, Jim & Jesse, Ralph Stanley, and at the age of 13, made his Grand Ole Opry debut as a guest of Alison Krauss. Then soon appearing on “A Prairie Home Companion” and playing before the U.S. Congress. In May of 1999, after graduating from the Kentucky School for the Blind, Mike toured with Dale Ann Bradley and Coon Creek before joining Rhonda Vincent and The Rage in 2000. It was then he began bringing home many prestigious International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) awards for “Fiddle Performer of the Year”. Since 2006 he has swept that award every year since and now has nine. He has also won many awards in other categories so far in his career. In 2002, Michael rejoined The Dale Ann Bradley Band before forming his own band, “Flamekeeper” Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper present a program of dynamic, traditional bluegrass with tight vocal trios, duos, blistering instrumentals, and fiddle-and-banjo duets. The show is rounded out with Mike's dry wit and the band's sense of fun. They are sure to leave the audience talking and raving long after Bluegrass for Hospice-2012. The Roy’s: Two-time Inspirational Country Music (ICM) “Duo of the Year” (2009 & 2010) and Inspirational Bluegrass “Artist of the Year” (2011), THE ROYS, come from a unique musical family and are known for their superb sibling harmonies and compelling original songs. Their first CD, “LONESOME WHISTLE” on Rural Rhythm Records, debuted at #7 on “BILLBOARD's” THE ROYS have shared the stage with George Jones, Lady Antebellum, Janie Fricke, The Oak Ridge Boys and Chris Young among others, and they've toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Canada, and made their debut in Australia this past January. They are featured in the 2012 Vietti Vinyl campaign and appear on the brand's Family Style Beef Stew sold in Family Dollar stores in 25 states. THE ROYS are also spokespersons for COMPASSION INTERNATIONAL, a child advocacy ministry. They recently taped seven episodes of their own television show, “Bluegrass Mountains” which will begin airing this fall. Their career is well on its way to the top and we are glad they can be a part of our Bluegrass for Hospice-2012! As you will see on October 27, the Southern Maryland area is endowed with Bluegrass talent. This year we welcome back “The Bluegrass Gospel Express” providing some fine Gospel music. Also crossing the stage that day will be “Charlie Thompson & Bottom County Bluegrass”, “Bubby Abell & Spoon Creek”, “California Ramblers”, “David Norris”, and once again we welcome back “Gracie’s Guys and Gals Dancers”.
