Sept. 20, 2012 - PRLog -- McGrath Medical, a medical hair restoration and cosmetic practice, has performed two successful pro bono hair transplants on local cancer survivors.  Dr. Dan McGrath is a participating physician in the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons’ Operation Restore program, which helps people who have lost hair as a result of disease or trauma and lack the financial resources to have corrective hair restoration surgery.

Christine is a 37 year-old wife, mother and artist.  Four years ago, she was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor.  She underwent chemotherapy which eradicated the cancer, but left her with some pretty significant hair loss on the front half of her scalp.  While grateful to be cancer-free, she was very uncomfortable with her appearance.  After being recommended to Operation Restore and Dr. McGrath,   Christine shared that she felt ugly and did not like the daily reminders of her cancer years later.

Now eight-months later, following her hair transplant, Christine’s hairline has dramatically changed and she is enjoying a full head of hair again.  The hair transplant has transformed her life.  Not only is she a cancer survivor, but she feels like she’s been given her life back completely now.

Derek was only 21 years old when he was diagnosed with an incredibly rare cancer.  He underwent several surgeries on his head and face to rid his body of the menacing disease.  Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation eliminated the cancer, but it also permanently damaged hair follicles and left him with patchy hair that did not cover his scars.  Derek was also recommended to Operation Restore and Dr. McGrath.

Dr. McGrath performed a single session hair transplant and eight months later, Derek is enjoying a fuller, more even head of hair that visibly covers his scars as a result of the numerous surgeries he had during his battle with cancer.

“Battling cancer is emotionally and physically debilitating,” said Dr. McGrath.  “To have your health back is incredible, but I see time and time again how emotionally difficult it is for survivors see the scars of their cancer on a daily basis.  When those scars are noticeable for everyone to see, it’s even more difficult.  I love being a part of Operation Restore and to have the opportunity to play a part in Christine and Derek’s recovery.”
