Moss-Miller LLC receives Florida Design-Build Award
for Nova Southeastern Coral Reef Research Center

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The construction management team of Moss-Miller LLC was recognized for the design-build of a new research building at Nova Southeastern University.

The NSU Center of Excellence for Coral Reef Ecosystems Science Research Facility (CoE CRES) won overall in the education category of the Florida Design-Build Awards presented by the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) Florida Region.

Moss-Miller received the award Sept. 13, 2012, at the DBIA’s annual awards luncheon in Daytona Beach Shores, Fla. In a letter addressed to the team, Karen Wallace, DBIA executive director stated, “You can be justly proud of your achievement…Your submission was rigorously judged by a panel of owners and DBIA professionals.”

The CoE CRES, located at the university’s Oceanographic Center in Hollywood, Fla., is the only research facility in the United States dedicated to coral reef ecosystem research. Funded in part by a $15 million stimulus grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the facility encompasses all disciplines required for integrated coral reef studies. The center’s 87,000-square-foot, 5-story building accommodates these disciplines, which include plant and animal studies, hydrodynamics, genomics, geospatial analysis and mapping, and biodiversity.  The facility was built to meet LEED Silver Certification or higher.

“Tremendous innovation and creativity was put into this project and we are honored to be recognized for that remarkable effort,” said Moss Senior Vice President Brett Atkinson, who has overseen construction on this project and others during the university’s multi-year expansion. “By handling a project from beginning to end, we were able to offer Nova a more integrated process. At the end of the day, this is world-class and will solidify Nova’s leadership role in global oceanographic research.”

Design-build is a method in which one entity (a design-builder) forges a single contract with the owner to provide both the architectural/engineering design services and the construction services. The Design-Build Institute of America is dedicated to leading the expansion of the single source delivery method across all industries and markets. The CoA CRES is a design-build project with Moss-Miller, Cannon Design and ACAI architects.
