While conducting maintenance on these engines, diagnostics are conducted using a computer program that electronically checks the engine. Running a diagnostic program on an engine takes the guesswork out of determining what issues need to be addressed.

Running your diagnostic program requires a computer. Some manufacturers of diagnostic tools offer laptops that are preloaded with diagnostic software. However, any computer that meets the minimum requirements of a Pentium 1.8 G processor, 512 MB of RAM, 1 GB free space on the hard drive, and a Windows 2000 or XP operating system.

The diagnostic software required is the Caterpillar Electronic Technician, also known as CAT ET. This software communicates with the engine and can retrieve information concerning mileage on the engine, amount of fuel used and other important data. The software is also useful for calibrating the engine.

Computer Interface

To run the software there must be a computer interface between your computer and the engine. The interface consists of a data link cable and communicator box which translates the signals from the engine to data understandable by the computer.
