Historic Pub Marks New Era As One Of North Queensland's Best

Oct. 25, 2012 - PRLog -- Bringing the iconic landmark, which has stood in the town centre for more than 135 years, back to life as well as preserving the hotel’s rich history has been paramount for owners Charles and Trish Ryman who were recently recognised as finalists in the North Queensland Tourism Awards for unique accommodation.

Mr Ryman said to receive acknowledgement for their accommodation as one of the best in north Queensland was extremely gratifying and built on its status as the only heritage listed iconic hotel in Queensland.

From its roots as a modest hotel, he said the pair had always planned to grow and transform the tourist icon’s existing budget accommodation into an offering more suited to the changing nature of its visitor.  

The refurbishment works, which were carried out personally by Charles Ryman, relied on his experience and background in development.

“All work undertaken was sensitive of the hotel’s history, restoring the architectural features of a bygone era, while still retaining many of the original features of the post-war building that was rebuilt in 1960.

“This work has brought this iconic landmark back to its former glory, while providing state-of-the-art modern, sophisticated accommodation.”

With nothing left untouched, the work which took 12 months to complete saw a total refurbishment of the hotel’s restaurant, a new lounge bar, reception area as well as new lawns and palms trees to create a garden bar. All 22 guest rooms in the hotel were also stripped back to bare and new electrical cabling and energy efficient air-conditioners installed.

“What makes Lees Hotel so unique is that it is an attraction in its own right, drawing visitors from around Australia and internationally, wanting to catch a glimpse of the original pub with no beer – the source of inspiration for Slim Dusty’s number 1 hit song,” he added.

Offering such depth of history together with its Queensland iconic status, Mr Ryman believed guests are given a true glimpse into Australia’s past, while still being able to enjoy all the comforts and services of its modern, sophisticated facilities.
