By: Greenwood Nursery, McMinnville, TN Founded in 2011 by Golden Tradewell a lifelong gardener, Healing Gardens provides accessible gardening structures and adaptive tools for the emotionally and physically challenged, elderly and veterans to engage in the experience of gardening. The idea for Healing Gardens came to Tradewell in 2010 after breaking her ankle while working in her greenhouse. A co-worker visited every other day to help water Tradewell’s extensive garden. The welcomed help provided her with the assistance needed for Tradewell to continue to maintain her garden finding peace and solitude. “I want others to experience the therapeutic properties I found right in front of me every day”, Tradewell said. Through donations the group purchases lumber, supplies and seeds for their community projects. A group of volunteers provides the labor for building the raised gardens. Selling plants at the local farmers markets raise funds and gives Tradewell the opportunity to educate customers on growing and harvesting vegetables. Healing Gardens, not only builds community gardens, but also helps individuals to establish container gardens.
