Follow on Google News | ![]() Indoor Allergy Week 2012 Starts to Get the Message OutAs researchers start to find strong evidence that our modern home environments are responsible for some of the most chronic health conditions, the UK's Indoor Allergy Week, promoted by charity, Allergy UK, received much stronger support this year.
By: Breathing Space Whilst this is, in part, no doubt a response to the generally-growing awareness that some health conditions, such as perennial allergic rhinitis, are strongly-linked to the environments within our homes, it also coincides with the release of several studies that suggest a much more profound health impact than was suspected hitherto. For example, the link between persistent winter snuffles and home-based allergens has long been recognised (although many doctors don't consider this in diagnostic terms), but a recent piece of Scandinavian research has made a clear link between poor ventilation and high humidity in homes and large populations of dust mites, the source of one of the major household allergens. The final report made a particular point of emphasising the impact of drying laundry inside without very good ventilation. In addition to getting information out in a concerted fashion, the other principal impact of Indoor Allergy Week has been to dramatically increase sales of dehumidifiers and air purifiers. Lynn Watt, from specialist suppliers Breathing Space, commented, "dehumidifiers and air purifiers are often regarded as completely separate solutions because they have different functions. However, the reality is that the health problems caused by poor indoor environments are often best tackled by a combination of the two, with a dehumidifier to provide a long-term reduction in mould and dust mite growth and an air purifier to provide health benefits in specific spaces in the home by eliminating allergens almost entirely". A full range of air purifiers and dehumidifiers from the likes of Airfree, Dimplex and Blueair can be found at http://www.breathingspace.co.uk along with clear and unbiased advice. End
