New Course Approved for Divorcing Parents with Minor Children

Dec. 9, 2012 - PRLog -- Pembroke Pines, Florida -- Pembroke Pines based, Florida Licensed Psychotherapist/Hypnotherapist and Divorce consultant, Dr. Percy Ricketts, has developed a new curriculum titled “Parenting for Divorce.” This curriculum is designed to help parents who have minor children and they fall into one of the following categories: They were never-married; they are separated, they are divorcing, or, they are involved in paternity actions.


Florida statutes #61 makes it mandatory for parents who are divorcing and those who are involved in paternity actions to complete a “4-hour Parenting Education and Family Stabilization Course,” within 45 days of filing divorce and paternity legal actions, if they have minor children (under age 18 years). In some jurisdictions, the children (ages 6-17 years) of divorcing parents and of parents who are involved in paternity actions, must also complete special divorce education and support groups (e.g. The Sandcastles Program) before the actions can be finalized. Parents, who are involved in those types of actions, should consult with Family Law Attorneys or with the Clerk of The Courts Office in the jurisdictions in which their actions were filed, in order to ensure that they fulfill all the requirements for their legal actions within the time frames that have been specified.

Dr. Percy Ricketts has a Master of Science Degree in Mental Health Counseling and a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology. He has authored over 10 books on a variety of topics including marriage, divorce and parenting and he has been practicing in the South Florida Area for over 15 years.  In addition to counseling clients of diverse backgrounds, Dr. Ricketts has been teaching parenting classes for divorcing parents and he has been facilitating Sandcastles groups for children of divorce for many years.

Parenting for divorce is approved by the Florida Department of Children and Families and it is available in a “live” classroom format in Broward and Miami-Dade counties of Florida.
