Follow on Google News | The Boardwalk on Front "Rescues" building in historic downtown WilmingtonJon Taffer from Spike TV's Bar Rescue has had an influence in downtown Wilmington. His trainings helped The Boardwalk on Front which turned an eye sore into the soon to be thriving restaurant, bar, and arcade.
The building has been vacant for 2 years adding an eyesore to the downtown area. Jack McCann and his partner Todd King had a vision for downtown Wilmington that would bring a fresh new look to give patrons a unique experience. “We want to focus and enhance the guest experience to increase loyalty and bring fresh new ideas to the Wilmington community,” said King. In preparation for the upcoming Grand Opening next month, King spent timetraining with Jon Taffer from Spike TV’s hit reality show “Bar Rescue.” A virtual fixture in the restaurant, bar and nightclub business, Taffer is an internationally recognized, award-winning restaurant operator, owner and concept developer with nearly 30 years of hands-on experience. During the training, King learned proven management, and promotion strategies from Taffer. McCann was given the challenging task of the renovation. “We had the vision, but for it to become a reality would take a major overhaul,” said McCann. The 7800 square foot building was totally gutted, taking the floor to the slab and the walls to the original brick. Now after three long months of work, the partners can see the end in sight and look forward to welcoming Wilmington in to see the changes they have made. In addition to Taffer’s teachings, King also paired with “Chef Duffey,” a partner of Taffer, whose expertise lead King and McCann in the development of The Boardwalk on Front’s innovative menu. “The menu has a flair to it. It’s not your typical restaurant food. Everything from sweet potato fries topped with bacon, banana chips and peanut sauce to bourbon glazed deviled eggs to more traditional items made from scratch,” said King. The concept behind The Boardwalk on Front is a relaxed atmosphere that features a full restaurant, arcade, live entertainment, dance floor and bar. The Boardwalk on Front will be for patrons of all ages featuring many arcade games where you can win anything from stuffed animals to an Xbox. “We are excited to add a new fabric to downtown Wilmington. We want to have a diverse selection of things to do for everyone. It’s refreshing to see The Boardwalk on Front taking a building and turning it into more of a family oriented venue,” said City Councilman Charlie Riverbark. Not only does The Boardwalk on Front offer fun for everyone, but its unique atmosphere offers a snapshot of history featuring authentic memorabilia and boardwalk planks from some of the most famous boardwalks in the world, including Coney Island and Atlantic City. “We incorporated Boardwalk planks from various boardwalks including those effected by Hurricane Sandy. Our hearts go out to those effected,” King continued. The hours of operation are Monday through Sunday from 11:00am to last call nightly.
