Bestselling Author Loreen Niewenhuis Pre-Releases Her New Book to Select Independent BookstoresBy: Loreen Niewenhuis, Author & Adventurer Author Loreen Niewenhuis will formally launch her book, A 1000-MILE GREAT LAKES WALK (published by Crickhollow Books), on Saturday, April 13 at 7pm at Brilliant Books, 118 E. Front Street, Traverse City, Michigan. “We love Niewenhuis's work and she puts on a great event," Brilliant Books Owner Peter Makin said. "It's a winning combination.” It was a mid-life crisis that evolved into a mid-life adventure that led to Niewenhuis’s first book. When she turned 45-years-old, she felt compelled to break out of the day-to-day routine and to take on a big challenge. She decided to walk all the way around her favorite place: Lake Michigan. “I am magnetically drawn to that place where water meets the sand. There's something about that edge; I feel as if I've 'clicked in' when I walk it," Niewenhuis said. "It is along the shores of Lake Michigan that I return to center myself, to contemplate life, to think the long, unbroken thoughts that modern life interrupts." Niewenhuis is a MFA graduate and a past medical researcher with a bachelors of science from Calvin College and a masters of science from Wayne State University. In both her books, she offers witness to the natural beauty of much of the lakeshore and a concern for the health of the Great Lakes as she explored the long and troubling pattern of ecological abuses and environmental challenges. Niewenhuis tackled her 1000-mile hike around Lake Michigan in 2009. It took 64 days of determined walking, and she averaged 16 miles a day. Niewenhuis said, “I encircled the lake with my footsteps, recorded it in my muscles and bones.” In March 2011, Crickhollow Books of Milwaukee published the book about her 1000-mile hike around Lake Michigan, the world's fifth-largest lake. The book chronicles her adventure along with the geology, ecology, and other fascinating aspects of this Great Lake. A 1000-MILE WALK ON THE BEACH spent time on the Heartland Indie Bestseller List in 2011 and was awarded “Best Non-Fiction Beach Read” in 2012 by the Beach Book Festival. Niewenhuis’s first adventure inspired the second. “After encircling Lake Michigan, I began to contemplate the interconnectedness of the Great Lakes and how they work as a system,” Niewenhuis said. “I decided to do another 1000-mile hike, this time walking along the shores of all five lakes and many of the connecting waterways.” Niewenhuis tackled her second 1000-mile hike in large chunks spread between April and October 2012. It took 76 days of determined walking, averaging 13 miles a day. With this new book, A 1000-MILE GREAT LAKES WALK (also published by Crickhollow Books of Milwaukee), Niewenhuis takes readers along on her hike. This book explores the geology, hydrology, and natural history of the largest system of fresh water lakes in the world. The book also illuminates the threats to this massive ecosystem: invasive species, pollution, destruction of wetlands, and the gradual warming of the lakes. She raises important questions about preserving our wild places and protecting the fragile ecosystems on which we all depend. Niewenhuis will have a full book tour this year. Her schedule is in the sidebar of her blog and on her website. She will give readings and do signings of her book, and will also lecture at libraries, museums, schools, and other venues with photos and videos and maps from her adventure. "In my lecture, I explore how these vast inland seas were formed, the fascinating geology of the area, and the hydrology -- how the Great Lakes work as a connected system to move water to the North Atlantic Ocean," Niewenhuis said. She has been constantly drawn to the shores of the Great Lakes and was the perfect person to undertake these adventures and to write about the journey with a clear, authoritative -- and often humorous -- voice.
