By: McCarthy building Companies Inc Expected to start in early 2013, the building program will include additional operating rooms, an emergency department, observation units and associated support space that will allow for procedures and surgeries requiring up to a 72-hour stay. “McCarthy is thrilled to be selected for the UTMB Specialty Care Center expansion project,” said Jim Stevenson, president of the McCarthy Houston Division. “With a long company history of building highly sophisticated healthcare facilities, we look forward to building a state-of-the art facility that aids the UTMB team in its mission of delivering quality care to its patients and their families.” During construction, the on-site project team will be utilizing standard BIM practices including above ceiling coordination, virtual mock-ups and concrete lift drawings. Texas BIM Manager, Connor Christian, is working closely with HKS Architects, Inc. on an industry-leading BIM technique to deliver a spatially coordinated design model for this project. When projects are spatially coordinated and modeled, it lessens assumptions that have to be made by the design team during the design phase, as well as eliminates major conflicts and re-design early on. Additionally, a spatially coordinated model makes the construction coordination process faster and easier as most major problems are addressed during design. “UTMB is committed to providing the best patient care possible in its mission to improve health for the people of Texas and around the world,” said Donna Sollenberger, executive vice president and CEO of UTMB’s Health System. “We are excited that this expansion allows us the opportunity to provide more services and convenience to our patients who live in the rapidly growing Bay Area in a completely integrated system of care.” In addition to the UTMB Victory Lakes project, McCarthy has worked on numerous, complex healthcare projects including the award-winning design-build project for The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Alkek Hospital in Houston. Completed in 2011, the $240 million design-build project included a 12-story vertical tower expansion placed on top of the existing 12-story Alkek Hospital; this was one of the firm’s most challenging healthcare expansion projects to date. McCarthy’s design-build delivery approach is based upon a team-oriented process to project development – this constant, open communication yields exceptional results and is one of the many reasons why McCarthy was chosen for this project. The expected completion date is spring of 2015.
