Marathoner Gets Creative To Raise Funds for Cancer

Feb. 5, 2013 - PRLog -- Amani Council a participant in the upcoming Nike Women's Half Marathon is using the hope of love and romance to help raise money to fight Cancer. Council is running the half marathon as a member of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team in Training (LLS). LLS has partnered with Nike to raise close to $130 million over the last nine years. Council's goal is to raise over $5000 in the next 82 days.

“With Valentine's Day around the corner, I thought it would be a great idea to get others involved and do a bit of matchmaking in the process,” said Council.

On February 19th, Council and a few friends will host a dating auction called Dudes and Damsels. The auction website allows hopeful suitors to bid on a date with 25 of the region’s most interesting bachelors and bachelorettes.

“Cancer is a disease that has affected most people in some way,” said Council.  “Because of this, the support has come from not only the 25 participants who have agreed to take their highest bidder out on a date, but we have also had support from local vendors.   201 Bar has gone above and beyond by committing to host the event, provide free appetizers and they have also committed to giving a percentage of the bar sales tab LLS.”

To date, Council has raised over $2,500 using the social media outlet, Facebook.  She is hopeful that the Dudes and Damsels auction will help her pass her $5000 goal.

“We are excited to host this event with Amani and rally around such a great cause. Families are being saved and research is being funded through our efforts. If all I have to do is take someone on a date to possibly save a life, I’d go on a few dates for a cause so worthy, “ said Tanya Ellis one of the Dudes and Damsels participants.
