By: LUXURY TRAVEL AGENCY Adding to its appeal for Australians, right now one Australian dollar buys more than 22,000 Vietnamese Dong. In 2010 before the rise of the Australian dollar, the same amount bought just 11,000 dong. Most Australians will begin their Vietnam holiday in Ho Chi Minh City where, from the five-star possibilities, they’ll choose from around half a dozen hotels. At the top of the pile are the Park Hyatt Saigon and the Sheraton Saigon Hotel & Towers. The Park Hyatt is the Hyatt chain’s most luxurious brand and in Ho Chi Minh city, the hotel is among the best located of all the luxury hotels, with spacious rooms, a couple of truly fabulous restaurants and a big breakfast spread that covers all bases. The Sheraton Saigon Hotel & Towers is well located too not far from the Park Hyatt. The evening canapés on the executive floor are fabulous and generous and even if they’re not staying there, in the know travellers find their way to the outdoor Wine Bar on Level 23 to watch the sunset over the city with a cocktail or a glass of wine from the extensive and well chosen wine list. Once you’re ready to head out of town, Vietnam’s luxury, beachside resort options are now extensive. The Six Senses global resort chain, known for its castaway chic appeal and responsible luxury ethos, now has resort properties in different parts of Vietnam. SIX SENSES NINH VAN BAY Reachable only by a 60-minute boat ride (organised by the resort) Six Senses Ninh Van Bay sits on a secluded bay overlooking the East Vietnam Sea off Vietnam’s South Central coast surrounded by dramatic rock formations. Its traditional Vietnamese architectural style incorporates the Six Senses trademark natural timbers, stone, fabric and leather elements and while possibly not as spectacular as its Con Dao sister resort, is beautiful in its own more wabi sabi way. The Presidential villa here has had a swag of A-listers enjoying its ultimate seclusion. http://www.luxuryprivatetravel.com/ SIX SENSES CON DAO Six Senses Con Dao is a 45-minute flight from Ho Chi Minh City to the archipelago islands in Vietnam’s southeast. The resort, the first luxury property in this region of Vietnam, is set in a secluded bay, on a golden sand beach surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes, crystal clear blue-green waters, lush mangrove forests and coral reefs. Its stunningly beautiful architecture exceeds even the brand’s own incredibly high standards. The idea here is to take a good book, lie around your vastly oversized, beautifully appointed villa, swim in your enormous private pool, and saunter from time to time up to the village centre (the main resort buildings) for some of the best dining experiences you’ll have anywhere in the world. http://www.luxuryprivatetravel.com/ AIRPORT LOUNGE In December 2011 Furama Resort Danang opened a VIP lounge for the exclusive use of resort guests at Danang International Airport in central Vietnam. Resort representatives are on hand at all times to assist guests and refreshments are complimentary. Wi-Fi is available in the lounge. furamavietnam.com CRUISE A new boutique river cruise ship, the Jahan, was launched in October 2011, chartered exclusively by tour company Travel Indochina. The ship is touted as the most luxurious sailing the Mekong and all 26 cabins are 29 square metres, have private balconies, full shower ensuite (some suites have a bath), iPod docks and mini bar. There is an onboard swimming pool, large communal areas and it is the first Mekong ship to boast an onboard spa. Travel Indochina operates eight-day cruises between Saigon, Vietnam and Phnom Penh, Cambodia which take in Hanoi, Hoi An and Angkor Wat. GOLF COURSES Two new golf courses are set to open in Vietnam in late 2012. The Laguna Lang Co Golf Club, designed by six-time major winner Sir Nick Faldo, is an 18-hole championship course just north of Hue. The 6,958 yard par-71 course weaves between trees, crosses over rice paddies and streams and runs alongside the beach. The course is part of the larger Laguna Lang Co resort which comprises seven luxury hotels including Banyan Tree and Angsana properties. Former world number one Luke Donald will design his first golf course at Ba Na Hills in Danang. The mountain course will utilise existing natural features like large trees and streams and will be a different offering from other courses in the area. CON DAO DINING You don’t always feel like propping yourself up for the full show dining experience when you’re on holiday. Deli’cious, in the market area of the resort, is an eat in or takeaway deli serving up light lunches, mature cheeses, fresh salads, cold meats and pastries and cakes all day long. The Vietnamese kitchen, Vietnamese by the Market, is possibly the resort’s most popular dining option. Diners can watch from stools as Ms Len and her crew cook authentic Vietnamese dishes over charcoal flamed woks and in wood-fired ovens. At By the Beach, the main resort restaurant, Chef Richard Lee takes traditional Vietnamese recipes and adds his own twist, serving up Asian with a French influence. At lunch, the restaurant offers sweeping ocean views while the moonlit ocean is a romantic backdrop at dinner time. Con Dao guests have private butlers who will, among other things, organise activities, fetch DVDs from the library and oversee the delivery of an in-villa lunch or dinner if you just can’t drag yourself away from the poolside deckchair. The butler will also organise an unforgettable destination dining experience which could be a lunch time picnic in a secluded part of the jungle or dinner under the stars with sand between your toes.
