The Opal Man is now open in Spring Green, WI offering the public a wide selection of beautiful, stunning opals.
By: Wendy Quirk For over 35 years Dennis Dahl has focused his life’s work on one thing…opals. An expert in the field, Dennis has been in the wholesale opal business for over 35 years, learning the refined craft of cutting opals in 1972. Originally from Rockford, IL, he landed in Australia in 1969 for a 3-month job, and ended up staying a year after becoming captivated with his new-found discovery….the brilliant and powerful opal. Over the years, most of Dennis’s business has been selling wholesale to jewelers and businesses. He recently began offering his beautiful collection of opals directly to the public, for the first time. His quaint, stone house opal store in Spring Green, WI is nothing short of a Kinkade-like cottage offering a unique shopping experience. His frequent travels back to Australia, home of 90% of the world’s opals, reap him a harvest of brilliant, uncut stones, including black, Koroit, boulder, and light opals. Opals vary widely in rarity, location of origin, color, size and value. For example, Lightning Ridge in New South Wales, Australia, is the main producer of the black opal, whereas the light opal predominately hails from the South Australian opal fields, Coober Pedy, Andamooka, Mintabie, and Lambena. In the Middle Ages, opal was considered a lucky stone because it was believed to possess all the virtues of each gemstone whose color was represented in the color spectrum of the opal. Similar to diamonds, the most important features to look for in an opal are size, weight, cut and quality, as well as intensity of color. “I cut opals to maximize their innate beauty, and display their exciting array of colors. What I love about the opal is that they are each unique, and one-of-a-kind. Every single stone has its own character and mood. They each take on a ‘personality’ Stop by and check out this beautiful gemstone collection at The Opal Man, 137 S. Winsted St., Spring Green, WI 53588.
