Hidden facts from a forgotten corner of England make a compelling read

Award-winning crime writer, Penny Grubb, shines a light on some of Hull's lesser-known history in her novel, The Jawbone Gang. The book has been published as an ebook by East Yorkshire publisher, Fantastic Books Publishing.

ELSTRONWICK, U.K. - March 25, 2013 - PRLog -- The novel is set in present day Hull and Holderness, but includes some fascinating and disturbing historical vignettes. But are they accurate? 'The background to wartime Hull is taken from first hand accounts,' Penny tells me. 'Hull was subjected to night after night of bombing raids. The town was flattened. The account of the destruction of a brewery is sadly true. It was too near the docks. The bodies of the dray horses were later found on the roofs of the wool sheds where the bombs had blown them.'

Why did Hull have such a hard time in World War II? 'No one shouted about it the way they talked about London,' says Penny. 'But the Humber Ports were the
country's largest and most important. They remain so to this day.'

Wartime Hull is only glimpsed in the book but there's an especially disturbing personal story running through The Jawbone Gang where past and present clash in an unexpected twist of events. 'The personal story is fiction,' says Penny. 'But the wartime landscape is true. Ambulance drivers fought to navigate blacked out
streets across a landscape that changed from raid to raid. They had to drive with their own lights shaded, noses to windscreen to try to see the way ahead. And
often there was nothing left of the people they went out to help.'

The editor at Fantastic Books Publishing who worked on the ebook tells me, 'Human nature is a constant and the story behind The Jawbone Gang arises from
the ramifications of gossip, allegation and the consequences of good people turning a blind eye to bad deeds. In that sense, it is true to life. Better still, it's a
compelling read.'

The amazing cover art was designed by Paula Ann Murphy in Chicago.
