Follow on Google News | New Look, New View: Noted San Diego Bay Eatery Tom Ham’s Lighthouse Major Renovation UnderwayThis renovation will reposition Tom Ham’s Lighthouse as a dining destination by adding an outdoor dining deck along the entire bayside of the building. In addition a new bar and cocktail lounge will take full advantage of panoramic views of San Diego Bay and the city skyline. The design team led by Downes, who also oversaw the Bali Hai Restaurant renovation, will lower the windows to improve the scope and size of the bay view. Every interior finish will be updated to complement the classic early California design of this iconic building. The family-owned landmark was opened in 1971 by the late Tom Ham. Today, the restaurant is owned and operated by his daughter Susie Baumann and husband Larry, along with their three sons. The family also manages and owns the Bali Hai Restaurant on Shelter Island, which underwent its own renovation in 2010. The restaurant’s fully functioning US Coast Guard Lighthouse Beacon #9, received a new LED light in February. Tom Ham’s maritime artifact collection, such as antique barometers, model hulls, a Narwhal husk and a U.S. Coast Guard Fog Bell will also be on display. San Diegans know Tom Ham’s Lighthouse as a longtime favorite for brunch; the proposed renovation will place the restaurant top-of-mind for business lunches, dinners, weddings and special events. The San Diego Unified Port District has supported the renovation, expecting it to boost revenue around the port. Tom Ham’s Lighthouse History Tom Ham’s Lighthouse opened for business in 1971. The restaurant is famous for its spectacular view of San Diego bay and city skyline. When Tom Ham’s Lighthouse reopens in May, three of Tom Ham’s grandsons, Grant, Tommy and Andy Baumann will manage this San Diego icon.
