By: G&J Productions Other highlights unfold: a Manhattan School of Music piano night (4/11); saxophonists Lew Tabackin and JD Allen (4/12), and Antonio Hart and Sherman Irby (4/13) “Cuttin’ Up!” head-to-head, accompanied by pianist Aaron Diehl, bassist Dwayne Burno, and drummer Mark Taylor; Latin Jazz with the Arturo O’Farrill trio (4/20); and JazzPlus Gospel featuring songstress Eunice Newkirk on April 25th. Derek Fleming, Director of Business Development for the Marcus Samuelsson Group (the owners of Ginny’s Supper Club and its sister restaurant, The Red Rooster) puts April jazz shows at Ginny’s in a larger context. “Recent articles regarding jazz in Harlem may focus on the struggling state of the genre, with boarded up clubs, legal battles and clubs yet-to-open, but the top-level programming at Ginny's Supper Club clearly shows that the spirit of jazz is alive and well and thriving right now in Harlem. April 11 HARLEM OLD SCHOOL SALON- NIGHT ON PIANO Performed by Manhattan School of Music Faculty Harlem Rent Parties of yesteryear were legendary gatherings for jazz pianists like Fats Waller, Willie “the Lion Smith”, Duke Ellington, Mary Lou Williams, Thelonious Monk and others, where they showed off the great piano styles they honed in Harlem—stride, boogie woogie, and, later, bebop. Join us at Ginny’s for a 21st century version, with great jazz pianists from Manhattan School of Music, celebrating MSM Jazz Arts 30th Anniversary. Night on Piano will feature MSM Jazz Piano Faculty Garry Dial and Ted Rosenthal, as well as MSM Jazz Arts Students Angelo Di Loreto and Guy Mintus. G&J Productions presents April 12 CUTTIN’ Two Musicians-Same Instrument-Jamming Head to Head Aaron Diehl, piano Mark Taylor, drums Dwayne Burno, bass Lew Tabackin is recognized as a virtuoso, a bold, hard-driving tenor saxophonist. Lew has played in the big bands of Clark Terry, Duke Pearson, and Thad Jones and Mel Lewis as well as George Wein's Newport All-Star Band, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and his own renowned orchestra, co-led with Toshiko Akiyoshi. Hailed by the New York Times as “a tenor saxophonist with an enigmatic, elegant and hard-driving style,” JD Allen has performed, recorded, and toured with legends Lester Bowie, George Cables, Betty Carter, Louis Hayes , Ron Carter, Jack DeJohnette, Frank Foster Big Band and Winard Harper. G&J Productions presents April 13 CUTTIN’ Two Musicians-Same Instrument-Jamming Head to Head Aaron Diehl, piano Mark Taylor, drums Dwayne Burno, bass Sherman Irby is a long-time member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, during which time he also recorded and toured with Marcus Roberts and was part of Betty Carter's Jazz Ahead Program. A fluid and inventive blues-drenched player, Irby had a four-year stint with Roy Hargrove, was a member of Elvin Jones' ensemble, and Papo Vazquez's Pirates Troubadours. One of the “young lions” to emerge in the late 1980s a0nd first recognized for his influential work with trumpeter Roy Hargrove, Grammy-nominated altoist and educator Antonio Hart has established himself as one of the finest instrumentalists in jazz. He is a graduate of the Berklee School and has recorded and performed with a plethora of jazz greats including Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner and Nat Adderley, and is a protégé of legendary saxophonist Jimmy Heath. April 20 A long-time resident of New York City, pianist and composer Arturo O’Farrill has always remained close to his Latin Roots. An icon of the Latin Jazz scene, O’Farrill’ April 25 JAZZPLUS: Kenneth Thornton, piano Paul Ramsey, bass Phil Young, drums A soloist at the historic Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem New York, Eunice Newkirk has traveled across the globe performing jazz, blues and gospel. She has sung with renowned musicians such as Branford Marsalis, the late Frank Foster and Billy Taylor, Bobby Watson, David “Fathead” Newman, the late Lionel Hampton and Max Roach, just to name a few. April 27 with Special Guest Houston Person, Tenor Sax Lonnie Plaxico, bass Lafayette Harris, piano Steve Williams, drums “She’s probably the best singer I’ve heard since the emergence of Dianne Reeves” – Stanley Crouch She has been compared to the amazing Dinah Washington with vocals described as soulfully seductive, mighty and sumptuous. A classically trained singer, Tammy McCann is an internationally experienced jazz vocalist whose powerful, sultry and mellifluous voice paints pictures and tells stories by vocally merging jazz, gospel and classical music.
