Mercedes-Benz Takes Home Five Awards From the Motor Klassik Award 2013

Readers recognized Mercedes-Benz vehicles in a number of categories for perennially smart and beautiful design. The contest separated current and past cars into different categories, and recognized leaders in a number of segments.

First, the Mercedes-Benz SSK took home top honors in the “Classics up to 1930” category. This remarkable car let driver Rudolf Caracciola win major races like the 1930 and 1931 European Hill Climb Championships due to its powerful supercharged inline six-cylinder engine.

In the “Classics 1947-1961” category, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing took home the win. This predecessor to current SL-Series cars sports the signature gullwing doors, and was practically a classic sports car the second in went on the market.

The next winner was the 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K, which won the “2012 Auction Car” category for selling for the astounding price of $11.8 million at the Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach last year. It was originally owned by the Baroness Gisela von Krieger, and was driven in Switzerland before it was sent over to the United States and stored for over forty years.

In the modern “Luxury Segment” category, the Mercedes-Ben CLS Shooting Brake took home the top award with a commanding 42% of the votes. It sports an unusual amount of sleek elegance and practicality for a luxury sports car due in part to to its hatchback design.

Finally, in the “Off-Roader” category, the rugged Mercedes-Benz G-Class (http://www.motorwerksmercedes.com/showroom/2013/Mercedes-...) won for combining both astounding off-road capability with a luxurious interior with high-tech features. The G-Class has been in production since the 70s, and each version has been one of the most sophisticated off-road vehicles on the market at the time.
