Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County Continue to Focus on Health and Wellness

Bringing Families Together to Help Fight Childhood Obesity Live Healthy! Stay Healthy!

MONTEREY, Calif. - April 22, 2013 - PRLog -- Seaside, CA – April 19, 2013.  Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County (BGCMC) was one of 194 organizations to be awarded a UnitedHealth HEROES grant from UnitedHealthCare and YSA (Youth Service America). In proud partnership with The Monterey County Health Department and Monterey Peninsula Regional Park district, this grant will be used to support the Live Healthy! Stay Healthy program, a youth-led project composed of three community events- a Family Fitness Night, a Family Hike, and a Family Walk. Each of these events will unite youth and families to fight obesity by increasing awareness and doing fitness activities together. The program is free and open to anyone in the community.

Live Healthy! Stay Healthy! concludes with a Family Walk on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at the Monterey Peninsula College track from 9am-11:30am. This event will help celebrate everyone’s success in completing the program as well as encourage everyone in the community to join us and walk together to a start of a healthier life.  BGCMC will provide free transportation for the Walk. Spaces is limited, so please contact Marylu Javier at mjavier@bgcmc.org or call at 831-394-5171, if you’re interested in attending the Family Walk event and would like transportation. Families also have the option to meet us at the event.

Previous events include a Family Fitness Night that was held February 28, 2013 at the Seaside Clubhouse. This event included a fun exercise activity, a nutrition presentation by the Monterey County Health Department, and a salad bar for the whole family to enjoy. On March 2, 2013, BGCMC and Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District hosted a Family Hike at the Palo Corona Regional State Park in Carmel. During the Family Hike, families gained knowledge about nature and the park’s history, while learning how to stay healthy and active.
