CEE Presents Dr. Terence Tao with the Joseph I. Lieberman Award in Washington, D.C.

MCLEAN, Va. - April 23, 2013 - PRLog -- The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE), with sponsorship from Capital One Bank, will host its Annual Congressional Luncheon Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at the Russell Senate Office Building, Room SR-325, in Washington, D.C.  

CEE will bestow its inaugural Joseph I. Lieberman Award for Outstanding Achievement in Mathematics to Dr. Terence Tao, Professor, Department of Mathematics, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), at the CEE Congressional Luncheon.  The award, along with a $10,000 prize, acknowledges Dr. Tao’s significant contribution to mathematics and recognizes Senator Lieberman’s (CT) more than 17 years of support of the Center as a CEE Trustee.  

Dr. Tao, a renowned mathematician and an alumnus of the Center’s Research Science Institute (RSI), is internationally recognized in a number of mathematical areas.  His primary focuses are in harmonic analysis, PDE, geometric combinatorics, arithmetic combinatorics, analytic number theory, compressed sensing, and algebraic combinatorics.  

The Research Science Institute, offered in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), is a six week summer enrichment program emphasizing advanced theory and research in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics.   At the age of 12, Dr. Tao attended RSI and had already been awarded the Gold Medal at the International Math Olympiad for excellence in mathematics.  

CEE’s President Joann DiGennaro stated, “Terence demonstrated mathematical potential and acumen at an early age.  He is an exemplary model of the young scholars supported by the Center’s Research Science Institute.  It is an honor that this outstanding mathematician is the recipient of the Lieberman Award.”

Dr. Tao has received national and international recognition for his significant contributions to mathematics, including the Salem Prize in 2000, the Bocher Memorial Prize in 2002, the Fields Medal and SASTRA Ramanujan Prize in 2006, and the MacArthur Fellowship and Ostrowski Prize in 2007. Terence Tao currently holds the first James and Carol Collins Chair in the UCLA College of Letters and Science, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society and the Australian Academy of Sciences.
