The Miracle Man of Ethiopia - Tameru Zegeye

Ethiopian Disabled 'Miracle Man' sets new World Record for 'Longest Distance Travelled whilst balanced on Crutches'.

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia - April 26, 2013 - PRLog -- Tameru Zegeye - an Ethiopian disabled athlete who grew up in the mountainous region of Welo - has attempted to set a new World Record.

On April 14th, 2013 a crowd of nearly 20 friends and family gathered to witness Tameru cover 76 metres using just his hands and crutches down the track of the National Stadium in downtown Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Ethiopia has a deep tradition for running and to pay homage to the country's athletes, Tameru's World Record was witnessed by Mohammed Aman - Olympic runner and 800m Diamond League Champion- who acted as the official adjudicator on the day.

Other judges included Keith Bowers of the BBC, Natalie Miller VP of Africa for Operation Smile (NGO for people with disabilities) and Hannah Gibson, Country Director for Jhpiego (International NGO in maternal and child health).

The crowd cheered and Tameru's heart grew as he took one step further towards his dream of being recognized as a World Record Holder for his unique, self-styled sport of balancing on crutches on his hands.

Tameru was born disabled and could not walk for the first 15 years of his life. After a chance encounter with a surgeon in a church, he was given free surgery and empowered himself to eventually complete his school education and then also graduate from college with a degree in Tourism. Today Tameru's strong spirit has guided him to the world of disabled sports, and he was recently hired by renowned traveling circus and social group called Debre Berhan.

His life has been transformed since only months ago he was isolated and often going hungry without money or food - but a passion to train in a range of circus tricks and stunts on his crutches.

Tameru now has the chance to travel outside of Ethiopia for the first time with the circus group he is working with to Sweden where he will be part of a theatre show for 6 months. The World Record status is being used to promote awareness around disability in his regions and around the world and to inspire others to believe that "Anything is Possible" - regardless of any obstacles or disadvantages in ones life.
