Breaking: The Search for Meaning

VICTORIA, British Columbia - April 27, 2013 - PRLog -- Maybe you have thought there must be something more than just the material world, things that you can perceive with the five senses: sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste.

Maybe you have a sense of something more while walking in a forest or gazing up at a star-filled night sky.

Scientific, natural explanations of what is real, simply do not fully satisfy, yet it is all our public schools and universities offer. In postmodern societies, the prevailing belief is that no fundamental meaning of life exists.

Traditional values and beliefs are declining or being pushed aside and replaced with the idea of the universe as simply a meaningless natural process.

For many people, especially youth, the void is filled with substance abuse, self-indulgence, some form of addiction, or maybe fanatic identity such as radical Islam. Many people are lost in depression and despair.

The meaning of human existence must be found somehow, somewhere. Is it to be found in sharing love with those close to you such as family and friends? Is it found in acts of service to the poor and troubled? Or perhaps in the pursuit of wealth? Is it found in joining some cause or project to make the world a better place? Is it in adopting a philosophy of doing the most good for the most people, while causing the least harm? Is it in pursuing a career in a helping profession such as medicine or social work or psychology?

The lack of meaning, purpose, or direction is a huge missing piece for so many people who have lost their way. We must begin somewhere in the search for meaning. But where do we begin?
