The BMW X4 Concept Crossover is Unveiled in Shanghai

BARRINGTON, Ill. - May 1, 2013 - PRLog -- Motor Werks BMW in Barrington (http://www.motorwerksbmwbarrington.com/dealership/directions.htm) is looking forward to an all-new model that will join the BMW X5, X3, X1, and X6 in the Sport Activity Class. The new BMW X4 was officially unveiled at the Shanghai International Auto Show this past month. The new crossover, which will bear many design similarities with the X6, albeit in a smaller package, should see production for the 2014 model year, and will be produced at the BMW plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina. While the official release date and pricing have not been made public, the new BMW X4 will likely be positioned between the X3 and X5.

Prior to the show, BMW had released some photos of the exterior of the new Sport Activity Coupe Concept, but this was the first official public appearance. The new car is being called a concept, but it is widely believed to be basically production ready by the automotive media. While the new vehicle is roughly the same size as the X3, it shares much more design lineage with the 2013 BMW X5 (http://www.motorwerksbmwbarrington.com/2013-bmw-x5.htm): it sports a similar swooping fastback coupe roofline, aggressive front end with large air vents, and distinctive large kidney grille. The concept car sat on 21 inch bi-color alloy wheels.

BMW officials said that little would change before production, but that there might be slight changes to the bumper and rear window configurations. BMW sources indicate that the new X4 will probably get a similar engine lineup to the 2013 BMW X3. There will likely be a 242 hp 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder, and a 302 turbocharged 3.0L six-cylinder engine available. A couple turbo charged diesel engines are undoubtedly in the making, but whether they make it to the North American release or not remains to be seen. It is also rumored that there will be a plug-in hybrid variant available, which would use a powertrain similar to the one currently available in the BMW 3-Series ActiveHybrid.
