While there are many causes, certainly increasing secularization is a contributing factor. According to a new report from the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report of the Centers for Disease Control, suicides in the United States are now greater than deaths from car accidents. In 2010, there were 34,000 deaths from collisions and 38,000 suicides. For Americans, ages 35-64, the suicide rate increased 30% between 1999 and 2010.
