For years, the College of Mental Health Counseling has been reporting on the increase of suicide, depression, addiction, family breakdown, and other mental distress in modern societies. While there are many causes, certainly increasing secularization is a contributing factor.

According to a new report from the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report of the Centers for Disease Control, suicides in the United States are now greater than deaths from car accidents. In 2010, there were 34,000 deaths from collisions and 38,000 suicides.

For Americans, ages 35-64, the suicide rate increased 30% between 1999 and 2010.

The National Center for Health Statistics reports that the use of antidepressants increased also. From 2005 to 2008, 11% of Americans over age 12 were taking antidepressant medications, which are losing effectiveness.
