eat-the-world expands to Bremen with a food tour of its trendy "Viertel", premieres May 31

A dash of culture, a pinch of pleasure and a spoonful of color - the food tour of Bremen’s "Viertel" shows its culinary and cultural sides. From Oriental cuisine to French treats, foodies can discover Bremen in a delicious way, off the beaten path.

BERLIN - May 24, 2013 - PRLog -- In addition to Berlin, Cologne, Dresden, Hamburg, Hannover, Leipzig, Munich and Münster, tasty trails can now also be found in Bremen. The first three-hour tour from eat-the-world, the leader of food and culture tours in Germany, starts on Friday, May 31st at 11.30. The walking tour takes guests through the “Viertel“, or the Ostertor and Steintor district as locals popularly call it, and presents selected cultural highlights along with small owner-operated restaurants in the northern metropolis.

The Free Hanseatic City of Bremen looks back on over 1,200 years of history, but its Nordic chic is something that has always left an impression on its visitors. Culture, art, and a rich history of trade adorn this city on the Weser. The Viertel/Ostertor and Steintor district unites the elegant and the shocking, where the mundane and the alternative coexist. Numerous restaurants, pubs with no curfew, trendy restaurants and chic designer boutiques shape the city and its lively streets, lined with magnificent building facades and hip “Altbremer“ houses. "With us, visitors can not only take part in the culinary food tour, but locals too," said eat-the-world-founder Elke Freimuth. The tour through the Viertel starts at the Kunsthalle. In the architecturally and historically diverse corners of Bremen, eat-the-world franchisee Christina Skjefstad will take guests on a culinary journey, as the diehard foodie chats about what life was like between Kunsthalle and Ulrichsplatz. Far away from the tourist trails, curious visitors – and even long-time residents – can find surprising facts about its history and architecture, while tasting delicious food samples.

The population of the district is so diverse and international that it is now reflected in its culinary offerings. With stops including a cozy deli bistro, a vegetarian-vegan specialty restaurant, a Spanish-Portuguese tapas bar, an iconic kebab shop, an organic soup restaurant and a French cheese shop, the three-hour tour offers treats like Bremen's best homemade rice pudding, rich vegetable hummus spreads, Middle Eastern wraps, Portuguese tapas (cheese, ham, salami, homemade codfish croquettes) and homemade chocolate tart for dessert. "After the tour, our customers should feel like insiders and not lose themselves in the glut of mainstream gastronomy", said eat-the-world Elke Freimuth of her goal. Background

During various stays abroad, the founder, Elke Freimuth, was always asking herself the same question: What do they eat in the area and what characterizes the way of life of the locals? When she then lived for a while in New York, USA, she noticed that the small, family-run businesses were disappearing, driven by the growth of large chains. The young entrepreneur says of her aim: “As a huge fan of European cuisine, I wanted to highlight the typical foods of different countries in relation to the daily lives of their local populations.” On her return to Germany, the idea of culinary and cultural tours away from the tourist trails took shape and in April 2008, eat-the-world went online. The “eat-the-world” concept remains unique. There are culinary guided tours or tapas tours in a number of European cities, but they are usually complete menus in three to five different restaurants. The idea of having a lot of small, representative samples is new. The company motto: Get to know the area through its food and its people. This concept helped eat-the-world’s founder, Elke Freimuth, persuade the Verband Internet Reisevertrieb (VIR), the online Internet travel portal association, and win its innovation competition, “Launch Pad 2009”. Now present in Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg, Munich, Leipzig, Dresden, and Münster, eat-the-world is the leader of culinary guided tours in Germany, with other European cities under way.
