Only one PineCone in Durham has been announced so far; perennial PineCone favorites The Wailin' Jennys return to the Triangle on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, for their Carolina Theatre debut.

PineCone will be adding and announcing more concerts in the months ahead.

Kick off the new year with PineCone and local favorite Mandolin Orange! This North Carolina duo has had a banner year: they were signed to local label Yep Roc Records and released a new CD, This Side of Jordan, to rave reviews. And last year, they were named the Independent Weekly’s Best Roots/Country Band of the Year (a title they shared with local favorites Chatham County Line). This show will be one of the group’s first headlining shows near home following the release of This Side of Jordan, and they are excited to make it a special, memorable evening for all in attendance. They haven’t shared specific details just yet, but they are ecstatic to play in the lovely Fletcher Theater and have a few surprises up their sleeve to make the night magical.

Two outstanding musicians will perform side-by-side in Raleigh for one night only! Tim O’Brien & Darrell Scott released a collaborative project last year, and they are currently working on a new studio album, Memories and Moments, due out in September. Last year’s project, We’re Usually A Lot Better Than This, is a live album that was recorded over the course of two gigs at the Grey Eagle in Asheville. Save the date to catch O’Brien and Scott sharing the stage in Raleigh!

Back by popular demand, Sutton, Holt, and Coleman (who performed as Deep River Rising) return to the PineCone stage with a variety of instruments, three part harmonies and a mixture of traditional and newly written songs, incorporating the old and the new to create a sound all their own. They also have a new CD out, Ready for the Times. Raleigh writer Jack Bernhardt wrote of the trio in the News & Observer: "Sutton, Holt and Coleman draw from the well of tradition, but advance the music into the 21st century." This trio sold out last time they came through town, so make sure to order your tickets early to secure the best seats in the house!

In March, Irish-American musicians Solas will share the story of immigrants during the Industrial Revolution through the lens of band leader Seamus Egan's great-great uncle's story. Egan was inspired by his family history to create Shamrock City – the band's most ambitious project to date. Shamrock City (2013) tells the story of Butte, MT, a mining town at the turn of the 20th century, as seen through the eyes of an Irish immigrant and Egan’s great-great uncle, Michael Conway. In 1910 he sailed from Cobh, Co. Cork in Ireland to Philadelphia and then made his way to Butte to work in the copper mines. Six years later, at the young age of 25, he was dead. With audio recorded in Philadelphia and film footage in Butte, Shamrock City seeks to not only uncover the life and young death of Conway, but also to illuminate life as an immigrant during the Industrial Revolution. The Shamrock City live show is an interactive multi-media stage show featuring stories from and projected images of Butte that is receiving rave reviews.

And in May, PineCone teams up with the North Carolina Arts Council to present the 25th Anniversary of the North Carolina Heritage Awards, which will honor masters of the traditional arts in an impressive ceremony that includes virtuoso performances and the stories of the artists designated as our state’s 2014 living cultural treasures. Performances by heritage awardees such as Doc Watson, Etta Baker, Arthur Smith, John Dee Holeman, Joe Thompson, and Ray Hicks have made past ceremonies memorable. Who will be the 2014 honorees? Look for more information later this summer, but don’t miss out on a show that will make you laugh, make you cry, and make you proud to live in North Carolina!

Perennial PineCone favorites The Wailin' Jennys are back on the road after another eventful (in a good way) hiatus. They return to the Triangle on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014 for their debut in Durham’s historic Carolina Theatre! Nicky Mehta, Ruth Moody, and Heather Masse continue to blend their three distinct voices together in amazing harmonies. Moody and Masse both released solo projects earlier this year to critical acclaim, and Mehta is working on her sophomore solo release, a collection of lullabies, due out in 2014.

More concerts will be announced in the coming months; tickets to these shows go on sale to PineCone members during member pre-sale week, beginning on Monday, July 22. Tickets will go on sale to the general public beginning on Monday, July 29. Not only can members reserve seats early, they also save money on tickets! Becoming a member is easy - you can join PineCone online, or call PineCone at 919-664-8302. And, if you order your tickets through PineCone's Box Office, you'll save more money by paying a flat $5-per-order fee (no additional per ticket fees). All ticket sales are final.
