By: 211 Community Impact On July 28 from 1-5pm local community leaders who have demonstrated a commitment to strengthening the lives of Newark residents and have a presence in different spheres the community are scheduled to read stories to children attending the festival. This unique activity at a hip-hop concert promotes literacy as a community activity and the Hip-Hop day of the festival as a family event. Scholastic has generously sponsored books for children to take home from the event and a guest appearance by Clifford the Dog. Dr. Lauren Wells, Co-Founder and Executive Director of 211 Ci states “Our goal is re-establish the connection between hip-hop, story-telling, community, and consciousness and to develop a community dialogue about literacy in our city.” The “Celebrity Read” Story Tent is part of a full day of activities, music, and vendors. A Skateboard Clinic for children will also take place in the afternoon. Hip Hop Yoga will run from 10am to 12pm. From 1pm to 8pm Lincoln Park will be taken over by some of the hottest names in Hip Hop all for the community. Artist performances start at 1pm until 8pm. The show will highlight legendary talents such as Naughty by Nature, Mr. Cheeks. Kwame, Rah Digga, Redman and Lords of the Underground just to name a few.
