Dog friendly holidays in the New Forest

Dogs are incredible companions at home and most dog-owners consider them as part of the family.  So what happens when the family wants to go on holiday? Many hotels don’t allow pets at all which makes holidays with a dog problematic.  New Forest Living, however, has a range of luxury dog friendly cottages that are perfect for guests and their pet including The Old Chemist Cottage at Burley and Oak Cottage at Godshill. Both holiday cottages provide the ideal place to hang the lead for a week in the New Forest and give a warm welcome to small dogs with prior arrangement. 
 
The Old Chemist Cottage is a three bedroom apartment that sleeps 5 guests with a fantastic central location to explore the New Forest.  Recently converted, it has been furnished with every creature comfort and has period details of the original terracotta flooring, a wood burning stove should the nights get chilly, French doors to the patio garden and a bench by the front door to sit in the sun with your dog and watch the New Forest ponies amble by.
 
Oak Cottage dates from the late eighteenth century and is an attached character cottage nestling within the quiet New Forest countryside, literally stretching out from the back door.  There’s a private garden for the dog to take the air and a utility room for feeding and cleaning dogs after a muddy walk.  This spacious holiday accommodation sleeps 7 guests and is comfortably furnished in traditional antique style.  Tired dogs can relax in front of the warmth of a working Aga and an inglenook fireplace after a long day out in the fresh air.

 Going for a Walk.

There is plenty of opportunity to take the dog on a gentle stroll or an energetic hike around the New Forest. And it has been well recognised that walking dogs in some beautiful countryside is beneficial for the dog-owner’s well-being not to mention that of the dog.  The New Forest is a wildlife paradise with 100 species of breeding birds, 4 types of deer, widespread numbers of foxes and badgers as well as the famous wild New Forest Ponies.  The Old Chemist Cottage is situated in Burley village alongside a gravel lane where ponies and donkeys wander contendedly.  Miles of heather moorland and dappled copses are on the doorstep. Oak Cottage is situated in an idyllic but lesser known part of the New Forest offering fabulous walking in the woods, by the winding river Avon and along the nearby Solent coastline.

Dogs always enjoy a day at the beach and perhaps a quick dip in the sea too.  Dog friendly Highcliffe Castle beach, close to both cottages, is tree lined with a good café located in the castle gardens offering fantastic tea and cakes.  Visit Mudeford Quay for children’s crabbing lines and fresh fish from local boats in season.  It’s beach hut heaven, dog friendly and under a 20 minute drive from the Old Chemist Cottage.

At the end of a long day, both cottages have local pubs on their doorstep that welcome dogs.  Relax with a well-earned drink at The Queen’s Head at Burley, close to the Old Chemist Cottage.  On the original site of a 1652 blacksmiths, it retains many of its old features from a century ago.  Or try the Horse and Groom at Woodgreen, close to Oak Cottage.  Here tables are specifically allocated to guests with dogs who are rewarded with their own dog treats and water.
 
Dogs are often seen as part of the family and they don’t need to be left at home when the family go on holiday or away for a short break.  Both Oak Cottage and The Old Chemist prove that the entire family (including the dog) can holiday in style in the picturesque country surroundings of the New Forest.
