He went on to become a serious high school athlete, winning the California State Wrestling Championship twice. During his college career at Oklahoma State University, Muñoz not only earned a bachelor’s degree in health science, but also two Big 12 titles, along with back-to-back All-American honors. He was also a three-year member of the USA Junior National Wrestling Team, where in 1998, he won a silver medal. In 2007, while studying for his master’s degree, working as a full-time coach and fulfilling his responsibilities as a family man, Muñoz began to train part-time in MMA. By April 2008, he’d decided to make the transition to full-time athlete, retiring from his coaching job. He made his WEC debut in June 2008 where he defeated Chuck Grigsby (13-3) in the first round. Similar fights followed, and by late 2008, he made his debut in the UFC. Today, Muñoz continues his juggling act. In addition to being a professional athlete, he owns and manages an MMA training facility, Reign Training Center, in Lake Forest, Calif., where he resides with his wife Kristi and their four children. He says that his success would not have been possible without the support of his community, which is why he makes it a point to give back by hosting wrestling camps for under-privileged high school athletes.
