By: Pleiades Gallery S U R G E September 18 – October 6, 2013 Opening Reception: Friday, September 20, 6-9 pm In this dynamic group show, ten gallery artists express the elements of SURGE -- power, flow, movement, torrent, deluge, acceleration, and profusion -- through works in metal, paint, wax, photography, and ceramics. Many of the pieces in the show conjure images of water. Sandra Elliott has several abstract impressionist paintings in the show. Two pieces, “Nature’s Surge” and “Power Surge,” have gestural layers and drips of oil paint in bright pinks, deep blues and thalo greens that speak of power and movement. In contrast, Sandra’s painting, “Water From All Sides,” depicts a gentler, more serene landscape in muted colors and soft lines. Darius Quarles has multiple new paintings on display for the SURGE exhibit. One striking piece is the inside of a wave crashing with fragments of water and light in myriad ocean colors. Another of Darius’ pieces for the show is a scene of a house, palm trees, and sea-side landscape all being blown about by a strong wind, calling to mind the powerful combined forces of tides and hurricanes. Sculptor Jim Adams presents a forged metal form called “Curl.” Suggestive of a wave, it evokes ideas of movement and fluidity, elegance and power. Kim Wheaton’s trio of paintings, “Ebb and Flow,” also reflects elements of ocean waves and tides, the power of water to shape sand, and the ceaseless movement of the sea. Using flow acrylics and wax, the media are dripped and blended across the canvases in waves of blues, greens, peaches, creams, and tans. Kim reinforced the idea of SURGE through the painting process itself; tilting each canvas and watching paint spread, combine, and flow.
