PHILADELPHIA - Sept. 20, 2013 - PRLog -- A Philadelphia Elementary School is taking it's fight for funding to the streets... literally! Nearly 300 people, including District Attorney Seth Williams and City Council Members Jim Kenney and Mark Squilla, are taking part in Meredith Elementary School's "Meredith On The Run 5K" Saturday September, 21, 2013, at 9:00 AM, at the school located at 725 South 5th Street (5th & Fitzwater).  Hundreds of students, parents, teachers, and neighbors will walk or run through Queen Village. This is the school's first 5K race to raise money for books and supplies, and to heighten awareness about the need for fitness and wellness. "I've been running races for years, but this is my first time organizing one," says Jessica Tilli, Meredith's 7th and 8th grade math teacher and the school's Students Run Philly Style advisor. "We appreciate the generous contributions of our sponsors and people in the community who just made donations because they want to help make a difference." Sponsors of the inaugural "Meredith On The Run 5K" include the Philadelphia Bicycle Coalition, Ciardi Ciardi & Astin Law Firm, The Food and Beverage Association of America, The NovaCare Rehabilitation, Keller Wiliams Realty,, Bookworks Early Learning Center, and the Performance Art Center For Kids. Honest Tea donated beverages, Famous 4th Street Deli donated cookies, and Giodarno's Produce provided fruit for the runners.

Instead of race t-shirts, the Meredith 5K Committee decided to give each participant a re-usable grocery bag that also support the school's Green Initiative. Sponsors will have the opportunity to have their logo printed on hundreds of bags that will be carried by race participants for years to come. The "Meredith On The Run 5K" fits into the school's effort to promote an active lifestyle at school and in the community. Last Spring, dozens of Meredith families participated in a bike-to-school event that encouraged students and parents to park their cars and ride bicycles to school. "We want our students to be fit physically and academically," says Meredith's Principal Cindy Farlino. "We are fortunate to have received a generous grant from the "National Center for Safe Routes To School" which allows us the opportunity to support these types of wellness, educational campaigns."

Meredith Elementary School is one of Philadelphia's top public schools located in the Queen Village neighborhood of the city.  Meredith became a success through strong leadership, and the unwavering support of parents and the community. It will remain successful through events like the Meredith 5k. "This race is a family event and a great opportunity for the entire community to rally around a great school," says Simran Sidhu, Co-President of the Meredith Home & School Association. "Ordinarily, this is a parent driven organization. The fact that a teacher is leading the "Meredith on the Run 5K" demonstrates the strong commitment to our school that permeates our community."

It's not too late to support the "Meredith On The Run 5K." On-site registration will take place on Saturday 9/21 at the school at 5th and Fitzwater starting at 8am.
